Chinese History & Cultural Perspectives

   Nazareth College in China short-term study abroad program is designed to fully immerse students in the culture, history, society, and economy of China. For 18 days, students will crisscross the country with Professors Fisher and Zhao, specialists in China’s history and performing arts. This is the first time we assist the faculty to arrange the logistics for their China study trip. 

 Itinerary:

May 16 Enter Beijing AC 31 May 15 2:55pm /May 16 4:05pm

Upon arrival in Beijing, your local tour guide will meet you at the airport and accompany you to the Jade Garden Hotel Beijing. Tasting Peking duck at a group's welcome dinner. 

May 17 Beijing

Visit Tiananmen Square and Forbidden City in the morning. After lunch, visit the Summer Palace and have a boat rides there. Enjoy the magic acrobatic show in the evening. 

May 18 Beijing

Have 2-hour lecture in the morning. Visit 798 Art District in the afternoon. Characterized by modern art, it has become the exhibition center of Chinese culture and art, and also the world-famous cultural and creative industries centralized area. Squeeze in a visit in later afternoon to the Dandelion School, or some other kind of NGO that deals with rural migrant children.  

May 19 Beijing

Whole day visit Mutianyu section Great Wall. It is the most magnificent man-made defense works in the world. The Wall rises and falls with the contours of the mountains westward extending more than 5000 kilometers from its origin at the seaside in Shanhaiguan to Jiayuguan of west part of China. Visit Wangfujing Street in the evening. 

May 20 Beijing/Xian

Visit a traditional tea house and try different teas as well as look at tea pots. Take a high-speed train to Xian. After dinner, check in Grand Dynasty Culture Hotel Xian.

May 21 Xian

Today’s highlight is the Terracotta Warriors and the Bronze Chariots, designed for the tomb of China’s first emperor –Qinshihuang. Thousands of life size warriors and horses still stand on the original site in military formation of the emperor’s burial complex. Then, visit Shannxi Historical Museum, one of the finest museums in China. Enjoy water fountain display in the evening.  

May 22 Xian

Bike riding on the City Wall in the morning and having a few hours lecture in the afternoon. Then, visit the grand Mosque and Muslim Street in the evening.  

May 23 Xian/Guilin  

Visit the Hanyangling Tombs in the morning and fly to Guilin from Xian in the afternoon. Check in a hotel. Profound Han culture, exquisite relics, unique underground museum and pleasant scenery make Hanyangling Museum the most charming and attractive museum locally and abroad. Guilin is known for its craggy peaks and Li River as well as heart of a magnificent landscape. Check in the Guilin Hotel.

May 24 Guilin/Yangshuo

Take Li River cruise to enjoy the wonderful landscape along the river. Experience the magical beautiful of limestone rock formations and farmland commonly seen in Chinese landscape paintings. After disembarking at the charming village of Yangshuo, check in the New West Street Hotel Yangshuo. Have bike riding along the Yulong River to enjoy the magic Yangshuo mountain and water in the late afternoon. 

May 25 Yangshuo

Visit Gaotian Village – boasts fantastic peaks, grotesque caverns and beautiful rural scenery. Students have an opportunity to learn how to cook farm food or fertilizing the crops there. Tour the Xingping Ancient Town. The town is really a beautiful place, surrounded by enthralling scenery.

May 26 Yangshuo/Shanghai

Visit the Reed Flute Cave - a famous landmark and tourist attraction in Guilin. Transfer to the airport and fly to Shanghai – the financial and economic center of China. Check in the Bund Riverside Hotel Shanghai and the rest day is at your leisure to explore the beauty of Shanghai. 

May 27 Shanghai

Visit the Shanghai Museum, City Planning Museum, Nanjing Road, and the Bund. Then, wander at Tianzifang in the late afternoon. 

May 28 Tongli Water Town

Visit Tongli Ancient Water Town - it is characterized by stone bridges and well preserved ancient architecture including private gardens, temples and houses.

May 29 Shanghai

Have a half day lecture in the morning . Visit the Shanghai Tower and Yu Gardens as well as the surrounding Bazar. Have a farewell dinner in the evening. 

May 30 Shanghai

Visit Shanghai Volkswagen in the morning. The rest day is at your leisure to explore the beauty of Shanghai or go shopping and pack you baggage for leaving. 

May 31 Departure ( AC 28, Depart at 5:10pm )

This morning is at your leisure time. Transfer to the Pudong International Airport in the early afternoon and fly back to US.
