“Joseph Rock and Botanical Gardens in China”
约瑟夫middot洛克与中国植物园
Outline for National Tropical Botanical Garden China Trip
Joseph Rock was an explorer, botanist and anthropologist who resided in western Yunnan province from 1922 to 1949. He had lived and worked in Hawaii both during his youth and old age. In the 1950s he strongly advocated establishing what has become the National Tropical Botanical Gardens.
This two week trip will take participants to what was in Rock’s day the remote western Yunnan province in China. During Rock’s early days one traveled to Yunnan by a French owned railway from Hanoi to Kunming. From there it was an 8-10 day overland trek to his home near Lijiang. Today, regularly scheduled airline service and modern highways have changed this region into a popular tourist and trekking destination. Our trip will focus on the area in northwestern Yunnan where Rock lived and studied for so many years while also visiting other parts of western China known for biodiversity. It will involve walking and mild hiking, but no mountain trekking.
We will start our trip in Shanghai before flying to Yunnan. In Yunnan we will visit the lovely valley around Dali and Erhai Lake, the famous Buddhist monasteries and Daoist temples at Jizushan, and areas in northwestern Yunnan where Joseph Rock lived and explored. We then fly via Kunming to Xishuangbanna, the homeland of Dai minority. We continue to Hainan Island. Hainan has been developing quickly over the past two decades as a Chinese “Hawaii” with beaches, fancy resorts and botanical gardens. The trip will exit via Hong Kong.
